Have you ever wondered how salons get your hair silky straight without a fly away in sight. Well, I want to let you in on a little secret that will save you a few dollars and time. Of course we all like to be pampered but what about those crucial times when you just can't make it to your favorite stylist. Lets dive into the world of the silk press that has taken over the beauty industry. A silk press is your modern day term for a press and curl or "hot comb" method.
What makes the silk press different than your normal flat iron? Not much honestly but, minimizing the amount of product you use and the types of products make a world a difference. Here is my routine for the most amazing healthy silky natural hair, no chemicals used.

DIY SILK PRESS

  1. Clarifying Shampoo- To ensure the hair is removed of all the dirt, oil, and residue of life without stripping it. If it has been awhile since your last shampoo or if your hair is pretty dirty, do this step twice to get to that squeaky clean feeling and lets begin the process with a clean slate. Clean hair is happy hair!
  2. Moisturizing Shampoo- This shampoo will add moisture back into your hair. You will notice a softness return after this cleaning.
  3. Condition and Deep Condition if needed.
  4. Apply a generous amount of leave in conditioner before your blow dry.
  5. Apply a heat protectant and smoothing serum!
  6. Blow dry hair down wards in sections working either from the bottom up or you can section hair into four (part ear to ear and from the front to back)
  7. Work in sections when you begin to flat iron. The smaller the section the more effective and efficient your press will be.
Simple enough, right? RIGHT! Works every time and your outcome should be smooth, flowing hair.

When doing a silk press there are a few things you want to avoid. Try avoiding oils or anything with a petroleum base. You also want to avoid any water based moisturizers.
